Introducing Secret Dreamscape

We are thrilled to announce a new 100% on-chain game built on Secret Network.

Secret Dreamscape is a multiplayer card game that will test your ability to out-wit and out-think your opponents with the victor taking unimaginable spoils. Here’s how it works:

Imagine a mashup of Poker and Scrabble. Each player is dealt a hand of 5 letter cards. Players use a combination of cards from their hand and the community cards, which are dealt Texas Holdem style, to build the highest scoring word. Throughout the game there are betting rounds which players can use to try and increase the size of the pot or out bet their opponents. A player wins the pot by either forcing all others to fold or by having the highest scoring word in a showdown.

The cards

All cards in Secret Dreamscape represent the world between dream and reality. They are brought to life with visually rich and stunning artwork, but there’s even more to these cards than face value. We’ve crafted a first edition collection of 10,044 unique NFT cards that can be minted by anyone and played in-game. The cards have been designed with utility in a way that will entice players to collect all the letters to build their personal deck.

Why is gaming on the Secret Network necessary?

Since the creation of the personal computer, gaming has been a major driving force for pushing platforms to their limits. Graphics cards wouldn’t have become as good as they are were it not for gamers wanting to keep improving the realism and speed; Innovations into digital experiences wouldn’t be what they are today without VR games, and online gaming has pushed our demand for faster internet speeds.

These innovations in graphics and speed haven’t made it to the blockchain world just yet, but games like Secret Dreamscape show the world what’s possible and are the tip of the iceberg of gaming on a blockchain.

Why is privacy important to on-chain dApps?

There are only two ways for developers to build a game on an open blockchain that cannot be exploited by malicious users.

1. Use a permissionless layer 1 blockchain like Ethereum with a layer 2 side chain like Chainlink. Developers can offload sensitive data to the layer-2 side chain to ensure that no malicious entity can read that data to their advantage. You’d never play poker if the other players knew exactly which cards were in your hand!
2. Use a permissionless layer 1 blockchain that can securely encrypt sensitive data by default. No side chain needed!

We are in favor of option 2 for two reasons:

• It is less development effort

What are the benefits of being entirely on-chain?

On the internet there is no way to know accurately or verify that a game is truly fair. Think about it, even with an entirely Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) you’re never sure if what’s running on the server is actually what a company says is running on their server. The blockchain changes all of that, it’s like FOSS with proof, you don’t need to trust us or anyone else, if something smells fishy someone with coding knowledge can double-check it themselves, making it finally possible to create provably fair gaming experiences.

Another benefit to being on-chain that the average gamer might resonate with: we’ve seen it time and again that once a game loses a critical mass in the playerbase, it usually ends up shutting down. However being on-chain relieves the burden of the financial sustainment of the game from the developers and lets the community continue to play indefinitely. Even if we decide that we don’t want to maintain the game anymore, you, a loyal player, will still be able to play it. And perhaps in 30 years you could get nostalgic with your grandchildren and even show them your past highscores.

Currently, you can play secret dreamscape on our testnet at secretdreamscape.com, and we’re planning to release it on the mainnet alongside the first batch of 10,044 unique NFT cards by January 2022.
